Kiosks have sprung up in shopping malls all over the country offering to buy your unwanted gold as US dollar prices soar, but they may not always offer the best deal for those tempted to sell.
GoldBuyers New Zealand, a Kiwi company part-owned by Aussie firm GoldBuyers, has opened kiosks in 14 malls throughout the country with a further five about to open, and is seeking to take advantage of a big spike in the gold price which is tempting many people to cash up their old gold.
Gold prices have spiked to $US1112 ($1587) a troy ounce from around $US850 ($1545) a year ago as speculators and investors have sold up shares and other assets to buy gold, which has the reputation as a safe haven in periods of financial crisis.
That has suddenly made it appear a valuable commodity and enabled gold buyers to offer more attractive prices for unwanted family jewellery.
...
Surprisingly, one of the two pawnbrokers we visited offered us the highest price. That was Ezyloans on Auckland's Symonds St, where we were offered $500, plus more scathing opinions about the kiosks.
We got similar opinions from the Gold House, a pawnbroker handily opposite SkyCity casino, who said many people came to get a second opinion after taking their gold to the mall.
The Gold House offered us just $400 for our hoard.

Dodgy dealers targetted in police crackdown

Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen goods have have been seized during a police crackdown on Auckland pawnbrokers this week.
Detective Inspector Greg Cramer said about 240 police executed 44 search warrants and made 47 arrests during Operation Castle.
Items seized included stolen high end watches valued at $300,000, cash, jewellery, drugs, laptops and firearms.
Mr Cramer said that the price of gold had doubled in the past three years making it the "item of choice" for many burglars.
"Generally such items are relatively small, portable and they provide a high return.
EZYCASH PRAISES POLICE FOR JOB WELL DONE.
As long time veterans of over 20 years of the Pawnbrokers & second-hand dealers industry & with shops Auckland wide, EZYCASH Licensed Pawnbrokers & Gold Traders have seen many changes over the years. One such disturbing trend lately has been the so called Gold Experts & Gold Cowboys coming into the industry lately offering so called "top cash for Gold".
As the precious metals market soars with the ever increasing European Dept crisis, people have been encouraged to sell or cash up their broken, scrap or unwanted gold Jewellery on the wave of all time high gold prices.
This has been encouraged by so called self proclaimed gold experts new to the industry opening up in Malls & shopping outlets wanting to make a "quick buck" from people's ignorance of the actual price of their precious metals. This in turn has encouraged burglars & their like to target such items in their dishonest crimes & in turn fuels the market to the detriment of honest people.
The recent Auckland Police initiative "Operation Castle" targeting rogue traders & the practise of buying stolen Gold Jewellery from known burglars comes as a breath of fresh air to the Pawnbrokers & second-hand dealers industry.
EZYCASH Licensed Traders has a long & untarnished record working in conjunction with the NZ Police trying to eradicate this type of behaviour amongst such traders & congratulates them on this very successful operation & fully backs the new NZ Police programme 0800 555 111 or 0800 CRIMESTOPPERS.
